Add your bad debtor to our national list of bad payers.

It is soul destroying when you provide your product or service to a high standard and your customer refuses to pay. They make unfounded complaints about the product or workmanship or mess you around with promises of payment and bounced cheques and eventually ignore your threats to take them to the small claims court, knowing full well that it will be costly and time consuming for you to do so and that you are not guaranteed payment even if you do have a successful judgement.

Rogue customers as these bad debtors are now known are a very real threat to businesses. Small businesses haven't got the time or resources to continually chase bad debts. Most bad payers know this and will hope that eventually like most business do, you will give up and write off the debt.

DebtorChecker encourages businesss of all sizes to be more professional in their approach to financial control. Members use a "Contract of Work" or similar document before any work is commenced or delivery of goods made.

This can be a simple document that sets out what work you agree to do and at what cost. The following statement is added to this contract:

"YOUR COMPANY NAME is a member of www.DebtorChecker.co.uk and in the event of non-payment reserves the right to add the customer’s details and details of their debt to DebtorChecker’s database. By accepting this contract you the customer are giving permission for your details and the details of the debt to be added to the DebtorChecker database in the event of non-payment."

Using a contract of works in this way will say to the good and fair customer that you are a professional and honest company but are serious about credit control. Customers who refuse to be bound by a contract of works are probably the customers who you should avoid in the first place. No matter how small your company or how small the work to be done you should always use a contract or works or similar. This forms the backbone of good financial control which is critical to the success of all businesses.

In the event of a customer refusing to pay, you write a final letter to your bad debtor to tell them they will be placed on a national list of bad debtors if you do not receive payment within 2 weeks. After two weeks if you haven't received payment just add your bad debtor to DebtorChecker which is easy and free once you are a member. You then post a copy of the contract of works and the final letter to DebtorChecker and you can then get on with running your business. You may not get payment from your bad debtor straight away but as the database grows and more and more businesses use debtorchecker, your bad debtor will find it increasingly difficult to deal with any business until they pay their debt to you in full.
